I Got Paid Before I Ever Hit 10k Followers

How pet influencers actually get paid, and why the 10k follower gate is a myth.

Almost every question in my inbox is really the same two questions wearing different collars: how do pet influencers get paid, and do you actually need 10,000 followers before any of it works. I wrote the long version in the honest guide to becoming a pet influencer. This is the short, plain-English answer to both.

I run Nicole & Nora, a faceless pet page about my two miniature dachshunds, and I’ve been paid through most of the ways below. No hype, no six-figure screenshots. Just how the money actually reaches a pet creator, and what the follower thing really means.

How do pet influencers get paid?

There isn’t one paycheck. There are seven common streams, and the healthiest pet businesses stack a few of them instead of betting everything on brand deals.

Not sure which stream fits you? Take the free 2-minute quiz →

Quickly, what each one means:

  • Brand deals — a pet brand pays you to post a sponsored photo or Reel. The one everyone pictures, and rarely the first to arrive.

  • Affiliate links — you share a product with your own tracking link and earn a cut of whatever sells. No audience size minimum to start.

  • Your own product — a guide, preset pack, print, or membership. The only stream you fully own and price yourself.

  • UGC — you’re paid to make content the brand posts on their page, not yours. Follower count barely matters here; the craft does.

  • Ambassador or retainer deals — an ongoing monthly arrangement instead of a one-off. Predictable, and a sign a brand trusts you.

  • Tips and paid subscribers — small recurring support from people who love the page. Tiny per person, steady in aggregate.

  • Platform payouts — creator funds and bonuses on YouTube, TikTok and the like. Nice when it lands, never something to count on.

Notice how few of these need a big audience. Affiliate, UGC and your own product can all start the week you decide to — which is exactly why the follower question matters less than people think.

One boring thing worth setting up before your first paid yes: a way to actually receive the money. Most brands and platforms pay out by PayPal, so if you don’t have one, here’s an invite to set one up. (Referral link, so we both get a small bonus. Sharing it because it’s the one I actually use.)

🐾 Helping animals is the whole reason we’re here. If you’d like to help too, you can chip in to our shelter fundraiser for Animal Haven. Every little bit helps an animal in need. Join us. 💗

That's the myth. Here's what actually decides whether you get paid. 🔒

Inside the paid half, you'll get:

  • Whether the 10k number matters, and what quietly replaces it

  • How many followers a brand really needs to see

  • What a small pet account can realistically make

  • Plus every paid post + the full archive.

  • The $29 Petfluencer Playbook, 30% off for subscribers only.

Upgrade and the whole playbook is yours, step by step, so you can get paid long before the follower count catches up. Come join me on the inside 👇
